Nippat or Nippattu is a spicy, savoury, crispy, usually disc shaped - one of the popular snacks from Karnataka, made from rice flour that is traditionally deep fried in oil. You all understand the harmful effects of deep frying foods and consuming them. However unhealthy fried savoury Indian snacks are full of flavour, texture and very difficult to resist most often. Nippattu is one such popular Indian snack. Nipattu's are also referred to savoury rice crackers in the West.
Most South Indians would have childhood memories of having this made at home for evening snacks or for many Indian festivals.
There are many variations of the original Nippattu recipe in different states in India. Called Nipattu in Karnataka, it has peanuts and little maida or fine sooji in it. Nippattu In Tamil is called Thattai and Nippatu in Telugu is called Chekkalu. In these variations they are thinner and light with little peanut or no peanut. Though all three of the variations use similar ingredients, they differ a lot in taste and texture. Roasted Gram, peanuts and sesame seeds are used in different variations for aroma and taste.
Usually Nippattu’s are gluten free but we do have bakery variants that have wheat flour or maida in them which is a crowd favourite.
